Please introduce IPCA to our readers
The Indian Printed circuit Association popularly known as IPCA, had its humble beginning in the year 1985 when a few leading PCB technocrats met at Bombay with proclaimed preamble promote the interests and welfare of PCB industry and allied industries in general. Thus a new chapter in the history of PCB industry in this country emerged with IPCA at the helm of affairs under the leadership of its founder-President Dr. Venkatachalam, MD of HI-Q Electronics, Hosur, and the founder Secretary, Mr. R.K. Singh, then from ECIL, Hyderabad. The PCB technocrats who enrolled themselves as members were only fifteen to begin with. Today, with the expansion of PCB industry, the membership has risen to an impressive level of two hundred and fifty, aiming inter alia to the advancement of education and technology in science and application of electronic packaging. The leading public sector units of both Telecommunications and Defense, who are the major users and manufacturers of PCBs, are on the rolls of the Association along with the private small scale, medium and large scale PCB manufacturers, raw material and equipment manufacturers in the country. This Association is the first of its kind in the country and in fact it is the only Association representing the interests of the PCB manufacturers and users devoted to promote the welfare and progress of PCB Industry in this country. The Association enjoys the complimentary membership of IPC, USA from 1998 onwards, updated by IPC with all the latest technical literature in the field of PCB manufacture. IPCA is member of the WORLD ELECTRONIC CIRCUITS COUNCIL (WECC) and is represented in all its international council meetings to provide an opportunity for IPCA to be in close association with other world PCB Associations like EIPC, JPCA, TPCA, KPCA, CPCA, IPC and HKPCA. The Association is a voluntary, nonprofit, service oriented professional organization comprising technical personnel and leading experts of the PCB manufacture in the country, formed with the sole objective of promoting the state of the art PCB technology in the country by mutual exchange of ideas and technical interaction arranged through seminars, conferences etc., periodically.
Please comment on Current Indian PCB industry Status
The mission of IPCA is to “To promote the state-of-the- art PCB technology and business in the country by, the UK, Italy, Spain, Thailand and New Zealand. India exports single-side, double-side, mutual exchange of ideas and technical interactions arranged through Seminars, conferences etc., periodically.” In view of IPCA, in current times, Imports come mainly from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea and the US. The import prices are almost at par with domestic prices with difference narrowing down to just 5-8%. The imports are largely due to huge demand supply gap However, domestic prices in medium volumes are competitive and do not face any threat from imports. India is exporting about 24 percent of its production to the US, Germany, Malaysia, Austria, Belgium, Netherlands and multilayer PCBs. PCB manufacturers in India mostly cater across electronics applications in India except motherboards, mobiles and high-end telecom equipment. Estimated by IPCA Indian PCB market reports an impressive 15% CAGR growing PCB demand. The market is fairly large and there is no dependence on single or few suppliers or customers. The main demands for PCBs come from consumer, industria, and automotive electronics markets as well as from power & telecommunications. PCB manufacturers in India mostly cater to the small to medium volumes across all sectors. The mobile phone, PC and communication technology sectors which are biggest consumers of PCBs still rely a lot on imports.
What is your ideology to organize 8th Edition IPCA Electronics Expo India 2015?
We have been doing this expo almost every year besides Bangalore in Gandhinagar and Pune, but this time we came up in Delhi to cover the Electronic industry cluster and as per industry requirements. IPCA is an organization of Electronic Circuit board manufacturers industry and we always go by industry request and demands. The idea of organizing the show is to connect the world with Indian Electronic Industry. IPCA is also member of World Electronics Circuit Council, WECC and they covers 8 regions, USA, Europe, India, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, China & Hong Kong. So all these regions have Circuit Board Manufacturers Association and each one of them organizes a show every year in their region and through Technical Conferences and Buyer – Seller Meet we relate national industry to international organizations. The whole point of organizing a show on grand level, is people travels to expo and invite each other so that to interact with experts from other countries. Primarily IPCA is an organization of Circuit Board manufacturers and their suppliers of Raw Material and equipment’s, Designers and Service providers, Assemblers &EMS companies from all sectors and IPCA show offers a common platform to people from all sectors and nations to exchange their knowledge and expertise.
What are the highlights of 8th Edition IPCA Electronics Expo India 2015?
The major highlights will be special emphasis on “Make in India” & “Digital India”. We are inviting organizations and companies from other segments also, like other component manufacturers etc. to show the world what we can do from India and what we plan to do in future. Also, we are going to do a session on “LED Circuit Boards”. Power electronics industry segment will be other highlight of the show. Telecommunication & defense electronics industry segment are also participating in the expo. Unlike other major shows in India, rather than inviting foreign manufacturers and suppliers to India we emphasis to showcase India companies & products to International market.
Can you add light on electronics consumption in India, percentage growth rate and key drivers?
60% of PCBs in India are imported and hardly 40% is manufactured. This is not because lack of technology, but somehow the hardware infrastructure is not significant in India and I would not say that infrastructure we have is not competitive, but the cost has gone up in China and everywhere, so in certain product line for e.g. Single sided and double sided we are becoming competitive in the world market. But when we e go for Multilayer Boards (MLB’s), or High Density technology we require economical support to meet the standards. This due to the lacking in infrastructure supply chain of raw materials which we have to import, if we make it here it’s not economical because economy of scale applies so unless the production of circuit board grows in the country the same will remain in question.
Tell us about your in-house programs to support and how do you get funding?
IPCA expo is one of the major source to raise fundsfor IPCA. Apart from that we run training courses, we have membership subscription, advertisement services, Buyers Sellers requirement, recruitment and job opportunity, member activity information and market survey data at a charge.
How are you identifying and reporting electronics manufacturing growth in India? What are the sources you are working?
We collect latest market data from our sources every year and so our data is very closely updated. IPCA does provide market research reports unless whenever people ask for it. We work closely with the Industry, our members, consultants and the Government department of Electronics (DeitY).
