The International CES, which serves as a proving ground for innovators, big and small, featured 375 startup companies, up from 220 last year. Mara Lewis, CEO and co-founder of Stopped, said, “There is no better place I’d launch a startup.” “There is no better place than CES to discover early stage companies in CE and related areas, and to learn the latest trends in technology.” CEO of Peak Ventures, Larry Richenstein, explained the business power of CES by stating, CES is curated to reveal the many facets of innovation. “CES is the new World’s Fair,” said Enrique Muyshondt, president, DesktopFab Inc.
“You have to be here!” We brought a record number of buyers this year. There is no place in the world where you get so much done is so little time,” said Fry’s Electronics President Randy Fry.
Highlights of CES 2015
Day 1
OSVR, an open source virtual reality platform, A single, open standard for virtual reality development. MatchStick: An open-source alternative to Google’s Chromecast. The fully open and adaptable HDMI streaming stick runs Firefox OS and allows users to “fling” video, music, and games from their computers and Android or iOS devices to any compatible TV. A more affordable, open source Linksys router. Panasonic goes Firefox OS, bucking the trend of proprietary interfaces. Called My Home Screen 2.0, the colorful UI allows users to browse the web, receive notifications, and pin apps, channels and HDMI inputs to the home screen for easy access. Linux gets tiny with Intel’s Compute Stick, Plugging a computer into an HDTV isn’t a revolutionary concept, but the four-inch Compute Stick Intel announced Thursday might turn some heads. The ultra-portable HDMI stick computer is equipped with a 32GB hard drive, 2GB RAM, an Atom processor and ships with Linux or Windows 8. The device also has a micro SD slot, USB port, and is Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled.
On the first day of CES, Ford discussed the ways in which cars could help collect data to find parking spots, adapt to road conditions and customize insurance for drivers in the future. BMW displayed new gesture controls and touchscreen for its iDrive interface. Mercedes Benz showcased its autonomous driving car. Parrot promised Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with its new RNB 6. Mercedes Benz displayed the F015 Luxury in Motion self-driving car. The rotating chairs for passengers, spacious interiors and touchscreen displays at the doors are the highlights of the car. Audi also showcased its autonomous car after driving it to CES from San Francisco. They also demonstrated the Q7 which has an Audi Tablet and Android Auto to control interior features. S mart home security system by MyFox, a European security company was one of the highlights of Day 1 of CES 2015. It has been designed to keep your home safe from any crime. The first HomeKit products have also been displayed on the first day. 3D printers like LulzBot Mini 3D Printer and other printers which will let you print your own drone or chocolates were on show. Dell and Intel also showcased their products on the first day of the International CES. We will bring you more information on the second day of this event.
Day 2
Dell announced a few impressive products at CES and the new 13-inch XPS particularly caught our eye. The laptop comes with an 13.3-inch edge to edge display that looks simply stunning, especially at the high-end configuration that comes with a QHD+ touch screen. Strone is a neat little device by an Australian startup that will let you say goodbye to roaming costs. The idea is simple – you buy the Strone device, connect it to the Internet, and when you are ready to go on a trip, leave your local SIM inside the Strone. Now, the device will automatically forward your calls to any Internet-connected mobile device anywhere in the world. LG released its latest and greatest phone LG Flex 2 today. It features a Snapdragon 310 octacore processor, 5.5″ full HD curved display and comes with the latest android lollipop built in.
Intel unveiled a new stick PC based on its latest QUARK SE system on a chip platform using atom Z373F Bay Trail quad core processor. It will be available in two variants: preloaded with windows 8.1, 2gb RAM and 32Gb onboard memory comes at a price tag of $189.
The Linux version boasts 1gb ram, 8 GB onboard storage and is priced cheaper at $89. This platform comes with support for the newer HDMI 1.4a specification. However, The Intel cannot be powered over HDMI, instead relying on the USB powered port. Other connectivity options include Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n and a mix of full sized and micro USB ports. Sennheiser revealed its latest lineup of Bluetooth headphones for the audiophile community. Priced at $399 and $499 (for the on-ears and over the ears, respectively), they have noise cancellation technology that promises to deliver decent sound. This is the first major step by Sennheiser towards wireless technologies and I expect more wireless models in this year. ord Motor Co’s president and CEO, Mark Fields, announced Ford’s new Smart Mobility plan, which promises to solve today’s global transportation challenges though OpenXC developer Platform. Harman unveiled Individual Sound Zone Technology which allows people to listen to different things in the car, all while leaving the other passengers in the car undisturbed.
Day 3
Lenovo has unveiled the A6000; an affordable 4G smartphone Audeze unveils £600 EL-8 headphones and Deckard DAC/amp. Bang & Olufsen introduces the BeoSound Moment music system with “mood control”. Not only is the design on the unusual side, but one of its key features is its “mood control” abilities. It has a colored “mood wheel” that chooses music from your collection based on how you’re feeling. Chord Electronics unveils desktop Hugo TT DAC/headphone amp. The Hugo TT supports up to 32-bit/384kHz and DSD128 audio via coaxial and USB; 24-bit/192kHz over optical; and DSD64 across all inputs. Additional features compared to the original Hugo also include a pair of XLR outputs and larger chassis. British hi-fi start-up Musaic has travelled across to CES in Las Vegas to take the wraps off its new high-resolution multi-room music system, which also incorporates smart home features. The mainstream TV manufacturers have all lined up at CES 2015 to share details of their line-ups for 2015. That situation looks set to change for the Chinese manufacturer. After launching its 55in 4K Quantum Dot TV H9700 in China not so long ago. With LG announcing the launch of its G Flex 2 curved smartphone and WebOS 2.0 TVs at CES the show rocked.
Day 4
McIntosh Laboratory took the wraps off the new D150 digital preamp/DAC. Heavy metal legends Iron Maiden has teamed up with Onkyo to launch a new range of headphones; the latest in a long line of music/manufacturing crossovers. Firm details, however, are still a little thin on the ground. Audio-Technica was at CES 2015 to show off its new MSR7 headphones, but there was also the first look at the AT-PHA100 – its high-resolution portable headphone amp that can decode high-res files in DSD and PCM. PonoMusic generated plenty of headlines since its Kickstarter campaign success, and it’s now been confirmed the download store element of the ecosystem has gone live in the US. Not just that, but the company is working with Harman on an in-car system.
The Zettaly Avy is a Bluetooth speaker that comes complete with an Android 5.0 interface. Mercedes showed off the F 015 Luxury in Motion concept car that’ll drive it and has interiors which will remind you of a plane, rather than a traditional car. Though plenty of regulatory and technological hurdles remain, this is one area worth closely watching in the near future. Saygus V2 has generated plenty of buzz at CES as the phone with 320GB internal storage, and while that headline is slightly misleading (more on that later), there’s a lot more to the phone. Windblocker is one of those products that, on hindsight, is so simple and practical it makes you go – “why didn’t I think of this first!” It is a simple clip with foam that can be attached to your smartphone or tablet right above the mic. This is the same ‘high tech’ technology that microphones used by field reporters have used for years to filter out wind noise from their broadcasts.
