The 100% electrification project of Sagar Island by West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited that received funding from the World Bank (ICZ) and State Fund has recently been commissioned by Sterling and Wilson Pvt. Ltd. The project will directly benefit the inhabitants of Sagar Island by making grid power available to them at their door step thus facilitating accelerated irrigation, support to the food processing industry, strengthening of education and health service, and providing much needed boost to the development of tourism on the Island. With the completion of the project the entire population of around 2.26 lakh people which amounts to around 43,000 households living on the Island will have access to grid connected power supply.
Sterling and Wilson, India’s leading MEP (Mechanical, Electrical & Public Health Engineering) Services Company has commissioned the 100% electrification project of Sagar Islands popularly known as Gangasagar that is situated in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal near the Bay of Bengal. Under this project Sterling and Wilson was entrusted with the design, engineering, supply, erection, testing and commissioning of materials for the complete electrification of all 42 mouzas of Sagar Island with 100% household electrification work. Sterling and Wilson was appointed to implement this project by the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited due to its excellent project execution record and superior engineering capabilities.
Speaking at the commissioning of the electrification project of Sagar Island, Mr. Bikesh Ogra, President Sterling and Wilson Electrical & Solar Division said, “We are pleased to commission this unique and challenging project for West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited. This project will truly bring about a lot of development in the lives of the residents of Sagar Island. Connecting the Island which is around 3.7 Km away from main land and separated by the river Muri ganga on the eastern side was one of the most demanding aspects of this project apart from the tight time schedule. However, our dedicated team of engineers and skilled man power stood up to the task and delivered a solution that is sure to brighten up and add value to the lives of the inhabitants of this Island.”
Sterling and Wilson has implemented comprehensive solutions during the design and engineering phase to ensure ease of operation and maintenance work for the project. The materials for the project were transferred to the site over Muri Ganaga River by transport barges. Sterling and Wilson transported and used around 31,000 PCC poles, 42 kM trunk & 448 kM Spur line for the project. The entire execution team was sourced from Kolkata and adjoining areas and placed under the direct supervision of engineers and linesmen from Sterling and Wilson. During the last 12 months of the project phase, work was carried on a round the clock basis to meet the stringent time lines. With an eye on safety the said project was executed with Zero accident and was completed within the project time frame of thirty six months.
