Helping the LED industry achieve enhanced efficiency, lifespan and design flexibility
New Delhi, India – Lighting manufacturers in India can take full advantage of the industry shift towards more efficient LED (light-emitting diode) technologies from traditional incandescent systems thanks to SABIC’s diverse portfolio of innovative material solutions, which will be on display at SABIC’ booth in Hall 11, #F39 at Light India 2014 from September 18 – 21.
As the Indian government pushes for increased adoption of LEDs to reduce energy consumption, manufacturers are seeking high-performance materials that enable them to develop long-lasting LED lamps and fixtures that are more energy efficient than incumbent technologies. Using its technological expertise, SABIC works with its customers to help provide solutions that optimize the performance, lifespan and aesthetics of LED lighting for commercial, residential and outdoor lighting applications, while helping them drive down manufacturing costs.
“India currently uses 18 percent of its energy for lighting compared to a global average of 12 percent which is why the government and lighting industry are aiming to reduce this consumption through efficient lighting,” said Venugopal Koka, Director of Electrical Industrial and Lighting Marketing for SABIC’s Innovative Plastics business. “LED technologies will continue to improve and drive further efficiencies across the industry.”
Koka added, “We will continue to work with industry leaders in all parts of the LED lighting value chain and offer our technical expertise and experience with material solutions, design and application processing. At SABIC’s technology center in Bangalore we offer a full set of capabilities to serve the lighting industry, especially in design optimization and thermal management.”
Reducing Costs, Improving Longevity for LED Systems
LEDs generate light five times more efficiently than conventional incandescent lamps, but much of their input energy converts into heat that – if not managed – can detract from an LED’s optimal useful lifetime. SABIC’s range of thermally-conductive KONDUIT™ compounds can improve the longevity of LED lamps by efficiently conducting heat away from devices into the heat sink, and can also enhance design freedom by offering an alternative to metal components. FIEM Industries’ bulb made using KONDUIT compound will be on display at the event.
A key challenge to mass-market adoption of LED bulbs is the higher purchase price compared with incumbent technologies like incandescent and CFL. SABIC’s material solutions can be a significant contributor to cost reduction. Benefiting from SABIC’s LEXAN™ LUX resin with MAX Diffusion technology, Switch† Lighting developed an innovative, blow-molded, LED bulb[1], which provides uniform and consistent light output and enhanced omnidirectional light quality at a more affordable price. The SWITCH infinia† bulb will be on display at SABIC’s booth.
Innovative Solutions to Design and Performance Challenges
SABIC’s LEXAN resin family of polycarbonate (PC) materials for the lighting industry, which includes flame retardant grades, offers designers a range of suitable materials to help them meet industry challenges. This includes resins with excellent weathering resistance, color stability and high transparency, making them particularly good candidates for outdoor lighting, an area where LED lighting is seeing significant growth in India. At its booth, SABIC will showcase examples of its outdoor lighting solutions including an application made by Acrilux, which uses LEXAN SLX resin.
SABIC’s broad portfolio of diffusion and high transmission LEXAN LUX resins help commercial lighting manufacturers create LED solutions with uniform light quality. With technological support from SABIC, lighting manufacturers are developing linear LED fixtures particularly suited to offices, which use LEXAN LUX resins to achieve superior white reflection. At its booth, SABIC will showcase an example of this collaboration: Intematix’s ChromaLit† Linear, a state-of-the-art fluorescent replacement technology.
