MAKROLON : “The Material of Choice” for LED applications due to its key properties
MAKROLON : “The Material of Choice” for LED applications
due to its key properties

Covestro (formerly known as Bayer Material Science) has developed plastics solutions through the Makrolon® range of innovative polycarbonate materials to well-suit the LED lighting applications.

Covestro has been developing innovative polycarbonate based solutions for each components of the LED Luminaire & replacement

lamp used by lighting Industry. Different component of a LED lamp requires diverse properties of materials and therefore multiple product types for various requirements.

Light-emitting diode (LED) products have been evolving since 50 years, but in the last decade the technology has accelerated sharply, driven by the demands of replacement lighting. LEDs hold out the promise of light phenomenally more efficient than that produced by any preceding technology; extremely long life in operation, measured in decades; and a versatility in the spectrum and character of light beyond that offered by any other source that humans have yet discovered or invented.

Energy Efficiency potential Market Investment is scaled at Rs. 74,000 Crores in India and it ranks

6th in the world in terms of the energy consumptions with nearly 25% of energy requirement is met thru the imports. This quite well justifies the reason why India is the key growth market for LEDs.

For ambient lighting, materials with high diffusion are desired that have a high transmission value at the same time. Those two basically opposing properties can be balanced by our color formulation experts according to customer needs with our special diffusion color recipes. Close collaboration with customer in terms of desired transmission values, wall thickness of the diffuser, half power angle and lighting setup leads to perfect match for almost every customer requirement. Grades with and without UV protection and

different viscosities are available in diffusion colors ® as well as diffuser sheets Makrolon DX and diffuser films Makrofol LM297. The summary of the key properties are;

– High light transmission

– High half-power angle

– Strong hiding power of LED light source

– Diffusion products and colors adjusted to your requirements

Diffuse reflectors can be used for indirect lighting. Covestro has developed special grades called RW

(reflective white) that have high efficiency in reflecting visible light. Compared to standard white grades, increased total reflection values up to 96% are reached leading to very high brightness. Use of

® ® Makrolon RW or Apec RW materials allows a high design freedom as the thermoplast can be injection molded in almost any shape you need.

Also FR (flame-retardant) grades are available in RW color.

® ® Products: Makrolon RW2405, Makrolon RW ® ® 2407, Makrolon RW6265X, Makrolon ® RW6267X, Apec RW1697

For specular lighting metallization of standard ® ® grades is possible. Makrolon and Apec grades

® are available for metallization. Special Bayblend ® grades for electroplating are Bayblend T65PG,

® Bayblend T45PG Heat management in LED lamps is of big importance. It requires thermally conductive materials. Traditionally, metals are used which limit design possibilities. Covestro has a special development with thermal conductivity of around 20W/K*m. This is an extremely good value for a thermoplastic material allowing replacing aluminum in LED heat sinks.

With transparent polycarbonate, it’s possible to efficiently design and manufacture LED parts with

complex geometries that would not be producible ® with glass. Makrolon LED grades are specially developed for use in lenses and secondary optics. They have an extremely high purity and thus a much

better stability against LED light in comparison to standard or optical grades. Yellowness index and

haze after long-term illumination with LED light are highly reduced, transmission remains on high ® levels. The lifetime of a lens made of Makrolon LED2245 or Makrolon LED2643 is thus longer ® than with standard Makrolon . ® With more than 60 years of legacy, Makrolon polycarbonate from Covestro is committed to provide the cutting edge solution to the worlds lighting requirements. Our manufacturing facility in Greater Noida has the capability to manage product development for the components of LED

Replacement Lamps & Luminaries and our extensive color library helps you to choose or tailor make the right material for your requirement.
