Hi-rel connectors ideal for race environment

Portsmouth, UK – March 2016 –Harwin, the leading hi-rel connector and SMT board hardware manufacturer, is proud to announce that it is to sponsor the Purdue Electric Racing (PER) team’s 2016 Electric Race Car which will compete in next year’s Formula Student/ SAE Electric championship.

Formula SAE is designed to promote careers and excellence in engineering and encompasses all aspects of the automotive industry including research, design, manufacturing, testing, developing, marketing, management and finances. Each student team designs, builds and tests a car which is then raced in a series of events across the globe.

Harwin Purdue teamHarwin has sponsored the team from Purdue before, and previous cars have used parts from Harwin’s EZ-Boardware range of surface mount solutions that address a range of industry challenges – EMC, cable management, test – in an innovative way which saves production costs and increases reliability. Interestingly, the PER race team has now identified reliability as a key competitive edge, so it is evaluating Harwin’s hi-rel connectors, such as the company’s 2mm pitch Datamate series, the 1.25mm Gecko family and the M300 high density power connectors that can handle currents up to 10A.

Comments Jessica Engel, marketing manager, North America, Harwin Inc.: “We sponsor a number of student projects around the world. Motorsport is a very challenging environment for electrical connection, because of the shock and vibration and sometimes temperatures that connectors must survive. We are delighted to continue our sponsorship of the Purdue team and wish them well in the race series next year.”

Added Amon Pereira at Purdue Electric Racing: “We have a good track record of working with Harwin, so when we were challenged to focus on reliability, they were the obvious interconnect partner. We are currently using Harwin’sDatamate Mix Tek mixed power and signal connector – proven in the harshest environments of space, defence and oil and gas exploration – for the electronic systems on our latest car.” Datamate Mix-Tek connectors are available off-the-shelf in a number of standard

configurations with power contacts rated at up to 20 amps, signal contacts to 3 amps and coax contacts rated at 50 ohms. Mix-Tek connectors are available in Male PC Tail, Female Crimp, Male Crimp and Female PC Tail options.
