For one week in June, Berlin became the center of the electrical manufacturing universe as CWIEME – the world’s largest coil winding, insulation and electrical manufacturing exhibition series – rolled into town.
This year’s CWIEME Berlin welcomed over 6,500 buyers, designers, engineers and academics from across the global electrical manufacturing community, all discussing the latest market trends. The event held from 24-26th June, was also organizer i2i Events Group’s largest and busiest CWIEME show to date. The three-day show, spread across six halls at the Berlin Messe exhibition grounds in Germany, featured some 750 suppliers from over 40 countries – including Aumann, DuPont, Hopf, Trancerie Emiliane and ThyssenKrupp. In particular, there was a 31% increase in the number of design engineers attending the event, as well as an overall 15% increase in seniority (general and corporate management).
Electrical steels, insulating oils, transformers and coil winding equipment were all in abundance at show – everything that a global OEM might need. Visitor Edward Mantey, product development engineer consultant at Numerical Solutions commented: “The best thing about this show is the variety – the wide-spectrum of products involved in the motor industry, transformers and electrical industry at large. Some unique and obscure technologies on display here. I would say that there’s nothing like it at any other show I’ve seen.”Another visitor, Gary Tickner, engineer at KUDU Industries commented: “This is my third or fourth time here and it’s definitely improved. I think it’s got to the point of critical mass where people realise that it’s the premier event for motor manufacturing and once that happens everybody knows that they need to be here. It’s a snowball effect.”
Standing room only
Visitors were also appreciative of the show’s content schedule, which included more than 20 free-to-attend seminars, technical presentations and round table discussions. Marcin Tulinski, generators sourcing director at Alstom Power said: “It’s getting more professional. We can see that the organizers are trying to prepare something new.”
At the presentation by Professor Martin Doppelbauer from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology on permanent magnet and field winding synchronous machines versus induction machines as traction drives for full-electric vehicles, there was standing room only. Other popular seminars included Dr. Faical Turki from Paul Vahle GmbH’s coil design, performance and induction charging options for increased e-mobility and Henrik Stiesdal of Siemens Wind’s permanent magnet generators for wind turbines.
Valuable networking opportunitiesThe CWIEME Leaders’ Forum the evening before the show evening also proved a success. The exclusive networking event at Soho House, Berlin saw senior management from a wide variety of global OEMs – including former Dyson CEO Martin McCourt – come together for an evening of discussion on the challenges and opportunities for manufacturers post-recession.
Haf Cennydd, portfolio director for the CWIEME exhibition series said: “Overall, it was a very successful show, characterised by the quality and variety on display. As a result, over 70% of exhibitors have already booked their stands for next year – some even increasing the size of their booths to meet demand. We will build on this momentum and further enhance our content programme to welcome more visitors and exhibitors in 2015.”
CWIEME Berlin will return on the 5-7th May 2015. Next in the series, however, is CWIEME Chicago which will take place 30th September-1st October 2014 at the DE Stephens Convention Center.
