Geel, Belgium, 18 Sept 2014– Accelleran Cvba, the software and design leader in 4G small cells, today announced it has selected Cavium Inc.’s OCTEON Fusion as the baseband processor for its M101 urban small-cell platform.
The M101 from Accelleran is a small form-factor TD-LTE eNodeB design, providing 1W RF power per antenna port and supporting one or two sectors. It is intended for deployment in urban heterogeneous networks (HetNets), where the deployment of small cells will complement macro cell coverage and add significantly to network capacity in high demand areas.
Cavium is a leading supplier of network processors for data-com and telecom networks. Importantly, it is the only silicon company with a unified portfolio of products that spans from small cells through macrocells and up to cloud RAN (C-RAN). According to Mobile Experts, Cavium has led the market over the past three years with early high-volume deployments.
The time duplex (TDD) method of LTE operation is being deployed later than its frequency duplex (FDD) LTE counterpart. However, many analysts expect that the upcoming rollouts of TD-LTE in the populous emerging markets of China, India and Russia will result in a significant opportunity for the technology. Illustrating the acceptance of this, the new iPhone 6 can support these TD-LTE bands.
“TD-LTE is an important part of the 4G environment but one that is just beginning to gain traction – particularly for small cell products”, commented Joe Madden, Principal Analyst at Mobile Experts. “The timing of this announcement is good, as it puts Accelleran and Cavium in position to address TD-LTE small cells as the market is about to take off”.
“We selected Cavium as the SoC supplier for our M101 basestation because OCTEON Fusion is a very high-performance solution, ideal for the demands of heavily-trafficked urban deployments,” commented Trevor Moore, CEO of Accelleran. “We were also impressed by the maturity of Cavium’s integrated LTE protocol stack; this has demonstrated successful interoperability with many different core networks. The fact their SoC has an optimized host processor is also important: it ensures full performance for VoLTE, which some baseband SoCs struggle with and allows us to include high-value services onto the M101 platform”.
“We are pleased that Accelleran has selected the OCTEON Fusion family for their TD-LTE metro small cell solutions”, added Raj Singh, Vice President and General Manager of Cavium’s Wireless Business Unit. “One of the important attributes of the Small Cell market has been the stream of innovation from new companies such as Accelleran”.
The M101 is a platform designed to enable high-performance wireless basestations for city centres and to serve dense urban areas. It has been architected to be exceptionally easy to deploy, with small size and an option of using internal antennas to meet “de minimis” deployment and zoning constraints in many markets.
