NXP Smart lighting Solutions – The Next Wave: Smarter and Secure
Speaker: Jacob van der Pol, Business Development manager, Product line RF-Connectivity Solutions, NXP Semiconductors

We help lighting companies join the IoT era by providing turnkey HW and SW solutions for white, tunable white and color RGB lamps to those who may have limited knowledge of wireless networking, RF design and software. To protect user sensitive data, we also offer NFC and secure element solutions to lamp and gateway makers. This enables the highest level of industrial cyber security possible and is just one example of how NXP realizes ‘Secure Connections for a Smarter World’.

Affordable, easy to use and robust consumer smart lighting networks have finally become a reality. This is due to a number of factors such as the availability of low cost, low power wireless microcontrollers and sensors, long life LED lamps, the ubiquitous presence of smartphone and tablet for intuitive control and standardized networking protocols. Also, smart lighting provides significant economic pay off by up to 30% energy reduction, reduced carbon footprint and enhanced consumer experience.

Smart lighting networks can serve as a backbone for IoT networks in the home or in commercial/industrial buildings. It can evolve into full home automation systems by adding security & energy management and HVAC devices. The proliferation of smart lighting to all lamp form factors (including MR16) and from plain white lamps to tunable white and wide color gamut RGB(W) lamps, provide more comfort to the user. Wireless network security and ease-of-use will be further improved by the adoption of low cost NFC tags on lamps and switches during commissioning of the network.

This has attracted the attention of multi service operators (cable/phone companies, retailers…) and utilities companies as it highlights the challenges of ever increasing energy demand. Raised awareness for the need to add new usage models to existing services and increase ARPU & customer loyalty is also illustrated which will reduce expensive churn.

These systems are complemented by cloud services to allow users remote access, via apps running in the cloud and on mobile devices. Cloud based computing also makes it possible to store and process the huge amounts of data generated by these systems and enables control of things “automatically”. Semiconductor companies play a vital role, providing security measures that offer secure authentication and encrypted communication in both the wireless network and in the cloud.
