As the leading distributor of electronics components, where you would like to place RS Components in the ranking of India distributors?
Our high service levels differentiate us from the other distributors in India and globally we are one of the leaders in this space. RS is typically into High Mix Low Volume business and our target customers are electronic design and maintenance engineers who needs ones of 100s of products.
What is the current product figure in RS portfolio?
Our product portfolio now has 5,50,000 products
from 2500 leading brands and we are continuously adding new products every month.
How was your business in 2012?
Despite of tough market conditions we continue to grow double digit.
H o w d o y o u o b s e r v e I n d i a electronics components market growth?
Can you mention the percentage growth rate?
The Indian electronic components market is
dominated by electro-mechanical components (like relays, switches, connectors, etc.,) and passive components (like wound components, resistors, etc.) However, in recent times, the active components (like integrated circuits, diode, etc.) have also witnessed significant growth. Globally it will grow at a CAGR of 6.6 percent in 2011-2015 and in India, it is growing at over 25% CAGR and is expected to be worth US $ 158 billion by 2015.
What are the latest introductions in your product portfolio?
The latest introduction is mostly into the electronicsrange where we are trying to strengthen our portfolio to meet the ever growing need of design engineers.
Raspberry Pi – a credit card size computer board is the latest addition which has already created a lot of buzz in the market.
How many products you launched last year? What has been the market response to these products?
We almost added 80K new products into our range last year. The results are very encouraging as 20% sales have come from New Product Introductions.
How is RS strengthening its product portfolio?
We have increased the introduction of new products from 5000 per year in 2008 to 5000 per month now. We aim to expand our product portfolio to 6,50,000 by 2014.
As part of our maintenance strategy, we are continuously strengthening our portfolio of Automation & Control products. We are leveraging our global relationship with suppliers like FLUKE, TE, HONEYWELL, SCHNEIDER and ABB.
How has RS strengthened its engineering support?
Through our website, we offer our customers an easy way to find, design-in and buy the right electronic components for their application.
To reduce the time and effort in the design process, we make free, essential design resources available for engineers through DesignSpark, our electronics design community and resource centre. DesignSpark offers electronics engineers a wealth of trusted and reliable technical information and resources, user generated reviews and free-of-
charge tools to accelerate the electronics design process.DesignSpark PCB is a free, professional-quality circuit design software tool that is supported by a full suite of video tutorials, examples and parts libraries.We also offer a comprehensive library of certified3 D C A D m o d e l s o f e l e c t r o m e c h a n i c a l components, downloadable free-of-charge and available in all popular formats
What are the key challenges for RS going through to 2013?The external market conditions are not conducive. There is shrinkage in demand and therefore pressure to maintain the balance between margin and cost is there.
What is the future outlook on trends, technologies and market growth?India is one of the fastest growing markets of electronics in the world. Recent trend shows that an increasing number of engineering and design activities are also being outsourced to EMS companies. These companies are becoming Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs) and also provide final system integration and logistics support. So the opportunity available is huge for electronics in this country. |
Raspberry Pi
The Raspberry Pi is a credit-card sized computer board that plugs into a TV and a keyboard. It’s a miniature ARM-based PC which can be used for many of the things that a desktop PC does, like spreadsheets, word-processing and games. It also plays High-Definition video. The Raspberry Pi model B board is supplied as the board only, and comes without operating system, SD card, power supply, keyboard, case or cables.
The Raspberry Pi Foundation is a charity established to promote the development of computer development skills in education across the globe. As such, Raspberry Pi computers act as an enabler for the next generation of programmers to enter the IT industry. |
The Raspberry Pi measures 85.60mm x 53.98mm x 17mm, with a little overlap for the SD card and connectors which project over the edges. It weighs 45g. Model B has 512Mb RAM, 2 USB por t and an Ethernet por t. The SoC is a Broadcom BCM2835. This contains an ARM1176JZFS, with floating point, running at 700Mhz, and a Videocore 4 GPU. The GPU is capable of BluRay quality playback, using H.264 at 40MBits/s. It has a fast 3D core accessed using the supplied OpenGL ES2.0 and OpenVG libraries. There’s a standard 3.5mm jack for audio out and is also HDMI suppor ted. The device is powered by 5v micro USB.
