The Company Continental Device India Ltd., (CDIL) is a pioneer and a world class manufacturer of Silicon Semiconductor Chips and Devices since 1964. The Electronic Manufacturing Services (EMS) division of CDIL has been in operation since 1982.
As a part of continuous process of product innovation and augmentation, CDIL has introduced a range of LED lighting products under DyneL brand. CDIL’s strong semiconductor manufacturing base and with a background of providing a customized solution, selecting the right quality components and optimizing the driver-circuitry to be used in producing the LED drivers is an expertise that comes naturally to CDIL.
History
As a company, CDIL was the first semiconductor manufacturing company of India.started in 1964.
As that time, the people have not even heard of silicon semiconductor in India. Our Chairman, Dr. Gurpreet Singh has started this company in 1964.This year we are celebrating our 50th year.
Company started as a semiconductor manufacturing unit, and also, the first Indian company to have the silicon semiconductor Wafer Fabrication facility. We started with 2 inch wafers in 1971, first wafer fab was started in CDIL Faridabad plant, later that was shifted to Naraina plant.
The company was started with collaboration with an American company, with almost ten year duration of collaboration till 1974. We ended the technical collaboration. Then the company named as CDC, now closed, and taken over by Teledyne Semiconductors. After 1974 when the collaboration was finished, all shares of the company was taken by the Indian Partner, CDIL.
And later all developments was made by CDIL only.
Our Profile
CDIL has inhouse, specialist engineers, the top level management to the engineer’s team all are semiconductor experts, mostly, from IIT Delhi, NITs.
All the processes, developments of CDIL are done inhouse by the R&D group available here. In 80s was observed that CDIL should grow & increase their volumes, but the Indian market is very small.
And in order to automate CDIL In terms of quality, explore International market. Although the company was exporting since 1964, as at that time, there was hardly any user in India. Hence CDIL sells its products to some customers in US, their collaborators. But at mid 80s, CDIL plans to exports heavily, and CDIL was the first company to have the Govt. recognized export house status in early 90s.
Since than, we have been primarily exporting, and we export to mainly all developed countries, whether it is US, Europe, Far East & South Asia all our customers. Somewhere in 2005, we were the only semiconductor company of India to export into China. We have our customers in China, people were buying their products from China, and we are exporting components to China. Couple of our customers in China, needs a warehouse location in HK, because they have their plants, in China, and they want just in time delivery. In 2005, we started logistics warehouse in China, we stared stocking our goods to HK, and selling goods not only to China, but to the worldwide customers, to all over the places.
Our Focus
CDIL maintains leadership profile in the manufacture of a wide range of quality semiconductor components. Components that support Manufacturers to create sophisticated and cutting-edge-technology products for global markets. In a small but significant way, CDIL is contributing to this technology build-up, at home as well as in the international markets.
As a part of continuous process of product innovation and augmentation, CDIL has introduced a range of LED lighting products. CDIL’s strong semiconductor manufacturing base and with a background of providing a customized solution, selecting the right quality components and optimizing the driver-circuitry to be used in producing the LED drivers is an expertise that comes naturally to CDIL.
LED is one part as whole LED Lighting and another part is the electronics driver. Now we have in-house R&D for the design development and semiconductor components as main LED driver part. As LED products demand growing overall, we started manufacturing complete LED product design about 2 years back. Today our focus is on tube lights, the bulbs, the down lighters, and certain emergency lanterns and the lights, We are not only being a B2C company, we are a B2B company. As LED Lighting is a consumer product, we are now focusing on marketing of our end products. The product should be attractive as well as price competitive. We introduced brand DyneL. We are today, probably the only Indian company having very large share of semiconductor supplying to the lighting segment of CFL. In terms of volume, we are also looking at the OEMs options, for LED segment.
Our Innovation
CDIL LED Products demonstrate its commitment to promote advancement in next-generation lighting, and to lead the way in establishing LEDs as energy efficient, cost-saving lighting that address the needs of energy management solutions.
CDIL product line in India features an extensive LED Tube Light line, a high-efficiency LED Street Light line along with LED Bulbs and Solar Home Lighting Products.
Design and Development capabilities nurtured at CDIL have resulted in truly world class products.
Development of various LED Display board has also led to increase in the sales of CDIL LED Division.
CDIL LED lighting products offer a number of advantages over traditional incandescent or fluorescent lighting, including a longer product life.
We keep innovate our products. Today most the LED bulbs are giving the light on the top. It’s the centre the dome. But we have a bulb, that takes, dome to the bottom light, so the light also come with the bottom of the bulb. At the same time in semiconductors we are improving our drivers for a better power factor, for a better energy consumption, for a better efficiency.
When will LED replace traditional Lights?
Replacement is not possible so soon, considering Indian market situation. European market & US market are the mature markets, India has a rural segment. It is a new industry, I have been meeting lots of lighting manufacturers, they are still manufacturing incandescent bulb. At the same time, the urban segment can also, be divided into various categories. The categories that are interested in LEDs are the middle level & the high levels. The middle level is interested for cost saving on consumption. The upper level is more of status symbol. So Indian market need to be matured. I am not able to say when it will be replaced, but you will see a revolution in next 2-3 years, provided the LED cost keep coming down the way it has.
