A smaller version of the OPT3001 sensor, the OPT3006 is a single-chip lux meter with high infrared (IR) rejection, allowing it to measure the intensity of visible light as seen by the human eye.
The TI OPT3006 ultra-thin ambient light sensor, available from Mouser Electronics, offers detection from 0.01 lx to 83 klx with rejection of over 99 percent of IR light, allowing light measurement over a 23-bit effective dynamic range. The sensor allows engineers to choose between conversion times of either 100 ms or 800 ms, which can help reduce the effects of 50-Hz and 60-Hz noise sources such as light bulbs.
The sensors operate from a supply voltage range of 1.6 to 3.6 V and feature 5.5V-tolerant inputs and outputs (IO). The device starts up in a low-power shutdown state, so it consumes active-operation power only after being programmed into an active state. The sensors’ low power consumption (down to 1.8 µA in active dark mode and 0.3 µA in dark shutdown mode) and low power-supply voltage capabilities enhance the battery life of battery-powered systems.
The TI OPT3006 sensor is now shipping from Mouser Electronics in a small 0.856 × 0.946 × 0.226 mm PicoStar surface-mount package, allowing engineers to place it in limited-space designs. The sensor features both I2C and SMBus interfaces and is designed for applications that require a low-power, ultra-small sensor, such as smartwatches, wearables, fitness bands, and display backlight controls.
