ELCINA, the Electronics component manufacturer’s association and MAIT, Manufacturers Association for IT, jointly organized the Source India 2017, Electronics Supply Chain, a B2B event. The event was attended by eminent delegates from across the electronics supply chain ecosystem deliberated on various issues and challenges facing the sector and ways to make the electronics manufacturing successful.
Vikram Kapur, Principal Secretary to Government of Tamil Nadu, Industries Department informed about Tamil Nadu’s focus on manufacturing and inclusion of electronics manufacturing in the Industrial Policy. He also invited inputs for the policy so that further impetus could be given to the sector.
Josh Foulger, Country Head and MD, Foxconn International Holding, India who has been playing a key role in establishing the mobile eco-system in the country, was optimistic about the future of mobile manufacturing in India and the policy dispensation for providing differential duty benefits being extended to the Tier 2 and Tier 3 bringing mechanics and SMT into the country.
Vikram Desai, President ELCINA highlighted the need for strong focus on developing the electronics value chain in India and advocated fiscal support for investments in this segment. That was the only way in which investments could be attracted in component manufacturing which was characterized by high capital output ratio and suffered disabilities such as high finance cost, logistics and procedural issues. He expressed satisfaction at the recent approval of the revised MSIPS Scheme which was of great importance for MSME’s in the ESDM industry.
Nitin Kunkolienker, VP, MAIT spoke on the Importance of developing component ecosystem and India as a Component Hub. Putting forward his recommendations for creating the ecosystem, he said “Government has to emphasize on formulating exports oriented strategy which calls for reorientation of trade policy & infrastructure to ensure that the industry becomes competitive in export markets and hub for global manufacturing and only then India can participate in the creation of global value chain.”
Some speakers also lamented at the declining share of local inputs in electronics manufacturing (studies suggest it declined sharply from about 45% in the late 90’s to ~20% at present.)
