Development continues: Following on from the Wi4U pro – an LTE Wi-Fi router for motor vehicles and buses – lesswire GmbH based in Berlin, part of the international Prettl Group, is now presenting the Wi4U city. Certified according to DIN EN 50155 and issued with both an E1 certificate and an R&TTE certificate, this device offers high-speed Internet and multimedia services for rail and road vehicles operated by local public transport and is available with immediate effect.
Passengers of scheduled bus services, trams and regional and suburban railways can always be well connected in two ways. This is because in vehicles equipped with the LTE Wi-Fi router Wi4U city they can conveniently access the Internet while on the move without using up their own data allowances. In order to ensure this is achieved with the best quality network connection, the Wi4U city transfers data using the fast 4G mobile phone standard LTE at up to 100 Mbit/s and switches over seamlessly to UMTS, EDGE or GPRS if there is no LTE network coverage.
More than just the Internet
In addition, multimedia services such as audio or video can be provided by the operator and accessed by passengers using the media server integrated into the Wi4U city. A total of up to 100 end devices can use the Wi-Fi network at speeds of up to 300 Mbit/s. Whether the mobile Wi-Fi hotspots are accessible free of charge or subject to a fee is up to the supplier. lesswire supports its customers during the setup process using reliable cooperation partners such as the company Hotsplots, who can guarantee everything will be set up in accordance with the law.
Connected and secure
The Wi4U city itself is configured via the user-friendly web interface, which can also be used to access the parameters for the security settings. When it comes to security, the company allows its customer to optionally integrate the router and all its attached devices into the customer network via a secure connection.
Cross-border connections
Another special feature offered by the router is multi-SIM. Thanks to the possibility of using multiple SIM cards, e.g. for journeys across several countries, the router ensures unrestricted connection even outside of Germany. In addition to this function, lesswire provides a GPS tracking function that enables the positioning of vehicles for example in the event of theft.
A question of technology
In order to implement the full range of functions in rail vehicles, lesswire relies on externally adjustable Wi-Fi antennas – connected to the device via two external connectors – in the product variant Wi4U city. These are often mounted themselves in external metal housings on trains.
lesswire is further expanding its range of connected mobility systems for its customers with the new product variant Wi4U city, which supplements the Wi2U public hotspot and Wi4U pro.
