Sunil Dhar, General Manager of India Business Operation at Renesas Electronics Singapore shares his insights on market trends and opportunities.
Q1. What are the top trends you see in the market today?
S.D: Today’s market wants everything smart, green, connected and yet cost effective.Microcontroller technology has been the game changer in most application segments. MCUs moving from general purpose devices to ultra-low power devices with application-specific peripherals.
Today, we are talking Internet of Things (IoT). With wireless integration of home appliances, lighting system, phones etc., living a smart life in a smart society is a major trend we see today.
Another trend is in energy space- creating smarter solutions based on solar, wind and LED and also efficient energy management through smart grid technologies being the backbone in the entire energy value chain.
In automotive, safety is key area for innovation, a far cry from 5-7 years ago where selling-point features are now the standards in most cars.
Q2. What kind of support does Renesas provide to customers in India?
S.D: Established in 2011, Renesas’ India branch offers full-fledged technical support. Our team of application engineers is dedicated to supporting local clients. Our main office is in Bengaluru, sales and marketing offices in Delhi and Mumbai.
We have a plethora of resource on our website; from literature, tutorials to sample codes, reference design solutions etc. Most importantly, our partner programs help customers in application development. The Alliance partner program provides online tools to increase the synergy between our customers, third party partners, and Renesas. Customers can search our online database to quickly find qualified design consultants, programming houses, third party development tools, and manufacturing companies that provide services or products supporting Renesas.
Also Renesas and KPIT Cummins Infosystems Limited established a dedicated offshore development center (ODC) within KPIT with the aim of strengthening Renesas’ design capabilities.
Q3. What solutions are customers looking for to stay relevant in today’s marketplace?
S.D: In India, we see customers looking for automotive design, industrial control and consumer electronics. There is also talk on LED lighting. Our mission as an MCU-based solutions company is to look for the uniqueness in the solutions that we can provide such as street lighting and home lighting.
In smart grid, we have the leadership. Anything from the PV inverters to solar cells to meters is all supported by an MCU-based solution. Today, we have some pure metering companies in the market trying to support smart grid but the reality is it’s an MCU-based solution. Connectivity is the way towards supporting the smart grid. The complexity of a smart grid can only be resolved with a true MCU solution.
