Avantha Group Company CG has been awarded with a prestigious contract by National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC), the largest generation utility in India, for the design, manufacturing and supply of Generator Step-Up Transformers for its largest capacity, 800 MW super-critical thermal power plant at Darlipali in Odisha. The order comprises 315 MVA 765kV single phase Generator Step-Up (GSU) Transformers, 85 MVA 765 kV Tie Transformers and 80 MVAR Shunt Reactors. The project is scheduled to be completed in thirty-two months. In addition to many orders of Generator Step-Up Transformers (GSU) and Interconnecting Transformers (ICT), this order for the highest rating of GSU transformers, puts CG on a strong footing as the strongest player in the UHV segment.
CG won this order against stiff international competition and was hand-picked for this project due to its successful track record and strong relationship with NTPC having partnered them for various other power projects across India. At a time when the Indian Government’s ‘Make in India’ call has resonated with Indian manufacturers across sectors, it is an opportune moment to showcase the indigenous capabilities of companies like CG that are setting new benchmarks in technology and value proposition. This order reinforces and is in line with CG’s strategy of making India a manufacturing hub while aligning itself with the growing demand from emerging markets.
India’s installed generating capacity is set to increase from the present level of 228 GW to over 700 GW by 2030. Fuelled by rapid urbanisation and industrialization, with the growth of emerging economies like India, millions of new consumers will be added in the future. A robust UHV infrastructure will be the backbone of the power sector and the answer to future requirements.
Commenting on receiving this prestigious order, Avantha Group Company CG’s CEO and Managing Director Laurent Demortier said: “We are honoured to receive this opportunity from NTPC in fulfilling their strategic vision through advanced T&D systems and smart technology. With our technology driven solutions, India manufacturing base and robust supply chain management, CG is well placed to leverage the growing demand in India and support power utilities in meeting their capacity targets”.
