State-of-the-art EF11-24mm f/4L USM delivers unrivalled image quality and versatility in both wide angle and close-up shots, covering horizontal angle of view at 117° and a diagonal angle of view of 126°.
The EF11-24mm f/4L USM is a wide angle zoom lens starting at 11mm[1] in Canon’s professional L-series range of lenses. Harnessing cutting-edge EF lens technology of high quality components, the EF11-24mm f/4L USM aims to inspire professionals in achieving a new range of photographic expressions.
Seeing the world anew through widest horizons
With a maximum wide-angle of 11mm, the class-leading EF11-24mm f/4L USM covers a horizontal angle of view of 117° and a diagonal angle of view of 126°. Shooting at 11mm also provides a shooting area more than twice that of the 16mm focal length. Hence, where there are space constraints for the photographer, the EF11-24mm f/4L USM can easily capture large subjects such as the façade of buildings or high ceilings.
The EF11-24mm f/4L USM is ideal for time-lapse video recording as it allows the photographer to capture wide visual fields in one shot. In time-lapse video recording mode, superior quality frames captured with the lens will deliver a cinematographic recount of an event.
The EF11-24mm f/4L USM is Canon’s widest angle lens and its broad range provides flexibility for shooting close-up shots while encompassing more of the surroundings. The versatility of the EF11-24mm f/4L USM will be a distinct advantage for photographers, allowing them to explore different photographic compositions with a single lens.
New optical system crafted from precision engineering
The optical system of the EF11-24mm f/4L USM was developed to ensure a consistently high image quality throughout the zoom range. The optical system comprises the assembly of four aspherical lenses, a UD lens, and a super UD lens to create the 11-24mm ultra-wide zoom lens.
The 87mm front element aspherical lens plays a pivotal role in the formation of the durable 11-24mm ultra-wide zoom lens. Besides minimising the reflection, another advantage of the large diameter lens is the reduction of the vignette effect. The new optical design, UD lenses, and super UD lenses, significantly reduce the magnification-type chromatic aberration – a common phenomenon that occurs with ultra-wide angle lenses. For the first time in the history of Canon EF lenses, two lens elements in the EF11-24mm f/4L USM have been specially coated with the Subwavelength Structure Coating (SWC) technology, minimising ghosting and flaring caused by reflection. In further reducing visible ghosting and flare, the fourth lens in the lens group has an Air Sphere Coating (ASC); an advanced anti-reflection coating constructed by tiny nano particles of trapped air which creates an ultra-low refractive index. Beyond its anti-reflection capabilities, overall optimization of ASC has also led to strong colour balance.
Designed for resilience
L-series lenses are manufactured to be reliable, durable, and able to withstand extreme conditions and rough handling. Having been improved from previous lenses, the EF11-24mm f/4L USM’s zoom function and lens barrel are less susceptible to shock and vibrations.
The entire body of the EF11-24mm f/4L USM is dust and water resistant to protect it from harsh environmental elements. Additionally, both front and rear lenses are glazed with a protective fluorine coating to repel water and oil. Oil that adheres to the lens can be wiped with a dry cloth.
The lens barrel also comes with a built-in petal type hood, which protects the large front lens from the glare of extreme light sources like the sun.
The Canon EOS 5D range of cameras as well as the EF11-24mm lens will be available in stores within the first half of 2015.
