32-bit general-purpose microcontrollers STM32L0 The product features, a 32MHz ARM® Cortex™ M0+ processor core, a 12-bit Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) that sets a new standard for low power consumption, and a USB FS 2.0 crystal-less solution.

The demand for microcontrollers, in India has increased across multiple application segments and the key drivers are metering, inverters and UPS. In addition it that, there are growing segments like solar/lighting, POS terminals, security systems and automobiles (for power train, body electronics, comfort and convenience).

While, the consumption of these electronics equipment is increasing at a rapid pace, there is a huge focus on lowering the power consumption and increasing energy efficiency. To address this need, STMicroelectronics announced the availability of the new range of 32-bit general-purpose microcontrollers named as STM32L0, in India.

The three important market needs – low cost, extended battery life, and low consumption levels even at elevated temperatures, are significantly addressed by this product.

The product features, a 32MHz ARM® Cortex™ M0+ processor core, a 12-bit Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) that sets a new standard for low power consumption, and a USB FS 2.0 crystal-less solution.

The STM32L0 series is offered in three lines: Access line, USB line, and USB/LCD line. Common features of all of the new devices include outstanding power consumption in several modes including 139 µA/MHz @ 32MHz, 87 µA/MHz using an optimized mode, and 400nA in Stop mode with full RAM retention and a 3.5µs wake-up time. The series also features up to 64KB of Flash memory, up to 8KB of SRAM, and 2KB of embedded true EEPROM. A built-in hardware oversampling capability also enables 16-bit ADC resolution. STM32L0 devices with integrated USB FS 2.0 interface support battery charger detection and link power management. Crystal-less operation of the USB is enabled via a built-in 48 MHz oscillator. All the lines offer built- in hardware engine encryption (AES) as an option.

As part of ST’s extensive STM32 family, the world’s most popular range of ARM-based microcontrollers, the STM32L0 devices benefit from the comprehensive STM32 development ecosystem. Moreover, the new devices are pin-to-pin compatible with STM32L1 or any other STM32 devices, enabling customers to rapidly upgrade designs to take advantage of the new power-saving opportunities.

Targeted applications for STM32 L0

1)    Industrial: For industrial segment, STM32 L0 answers to the needs of application like Gas/water meters and industrial sensors. Theses application requires high temperature range, an accurate time count, a filed firmware upgrade, data logging and Display capabilities. Thanks to the -40°C up to +125°C , the precise built-in Real time clock, the dual bank flash memory system and all the other embedded feature the STM32 L0 answer positively to such precise request.

2)    Healthcare: With the surge in personal healthcare and fitness, portable/wearable devices STM32 L0 offers high SAR ADC resolution hardware capability and is well equipped in analog and connectivity to answer needs of application like fitness tracker, body monitoring.

3)    Consumer: As integration is key strength of the STM32 L0, application such as remote controller, game pad or any USB accessory will reduce their respective BOM cost thanks to built-in in USB crystal-less, High speed internal clock +/-1% capable, audio capability with I2S and DAC. Any of those application that is showing footprint constrain will be perfectly served thank to the tiny WLCSP 20pins package available in the portfolio.

4)    For all wireless application: the STM32 L0 is the ideal companion chip thank to the embedded 128-bit hardware encryption engine, the 16 wakeup lines, fast mode plus I2C and 16Mbit/s SPI communication peripherals.
